March 2, 2015

Time: 3:00 - 4:30PM EST

Location: Online Webinar: https://fcrrevent.webex.com/fcrrevent/ onstage/g.php?MTID=e4cdbd274d5b6d8c4f54622364111e038

Description: Through repeated needs-sensing activities in Florida, there is an expressed need to understand the most effective strategies for instructing Dual Language Learners. While FL is a state that does not report the number of DLLs in pre-K for any of their programs, states in the Southeast region that do report figures include North Carolina, which has 21% DLL enrollment, Georgia with 10% enrollment, and Alabama with 4% enrollment (National Institute of Early Education Research [NIEER], 2014).

The event is aligned to the needs of the audience in that it will share the latest results of a recently conducted randomized control trial to promote school readiness skills in DLLs. The study findings will serve as the primary source of the content presented. Some of the major findings include improvements in Latino DLL’s letter identification, writing, receptive conceptual vocabulary, and mathematics. Overall teacher instruction improved as well.

After learning about the intervention and study results, participants will have the opportunity to view a video of teachers talking about their participation in the program. The webinar will conclude with a question and answer session where all participants will be encouraged to ask or submit questions.

Research Alliance: School Readiness Research Alliance

Audience: The primary audience will be comprised of Alliance members, FL Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) staff, FL School Readiness staff, Head Start staff, and other district and state personnel interested in early childhood DLL issues across the Southeast region.
